Hey Townhallers, this is my first post on Townhall. I've been blogging for more than a year at
http://americanfederalist.blogspot.com/ and just recently checked out some of the blogging going on here at Townhall.
First of all, Townhall is a great resource for Conservatives. Secondly, we need all the friendship and support we can get, right?
I'll copy some good posts to this blog when I put them up at
http://americanfederalist.blogspot.com/, but I think this space will be used more to direct people to the "Big Show" as I like to call it.
Oh, yeah! I almost forgot...
The title of this post is a question that needs answering. While I admire Federalists for their consistency on the proper balance (a term you're going to see a lot of at the Big Show) between the spheres of government, this is something that can be taken too strictly and drift into absurdity. I have heard it argued (and by some pretty prominent Presidential wannabes) that federalism is the answer for many contentious issues, such as abortion, for example (and the names of the guilty shall be withheld until such time as I deem it appropriate to de-pants them).
Yet, a truly
American perspective on the issue would draw on our charter document - the Declaration of Independence. The DoI rightly asserts that there are some rights that come to us from our Creator and they cannot be taken away or transferred to another class of people (although they can indeed be forfeited by our actions). Yes, even if that class of people are called "mothers."
To suggest that the "states should decide" is the sort of incomplete thinking that has gotten us into trouble in the first place. No; government at any and every level is charged with the protection of our inalienable rights. To suggest otherwise is no different than suggesting that the states should have decided the issue of slavery. For the record, suggesting that as the solution in either case is patently stupid.
Well, I welcome comments and challenges, if any. Bear with me as I work the kinks out of this new blogging format (new for me at least). And do stop by the main site and say hello to me and my "brothers."
